To kick off USC’s new Social Events Policy, McCarthy Quad will be transformed into a Silent Disco on Thursday, Jan. 16, from 9 p.m. until midnight.

Students can pick up earphones and choose from DJ stations set up throughout the quad to give them plenty of listening and dancing choices. So, if it looks as if students are dancing to the beat of their own drummer – they are!

Students who work up a thirst or appetite can purchase refreshments at food trucks parked in the quad.

The new Social Events policy, http://scampus.usc.edu/social-events-policy/, announced in a letter from Vice Provost for Student Affairs Ainsley Carry, Carry.announcement, outlines when social events can be scheduled – including those with and without alcohol.

Sponsored by Student Activities, the Silent Disco is the first university-sanctioned Thursday event since the new policy took effect. Social events where alcohol is served by the host student organization are permitted Thursday until midnight, and Friday and Saturday until 2 a.m. The policy was changed to allow university recognized events on Thursday. In addition, when alcohol is served, non-alcoholic beverages and food must be available.

Social events where alcohol is not provided by the host student organization can be scheduled Sunday through Thursday until midnight, two hours later than the previous policy, and Friday and Saturday until 2 a.m.

University administrators consulted with student groups to craft a  policy that gives students more flexibility and encourages them to schedule events with the university. For information about scheduling events, go to the SCheduling Office Website, usc.edu/scheduling.
