University Publications Gets a High Five from CASE
University Publications, a department of USC Student Affairs, recently won five awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). The awards — which recognize videography, photography, graphic design and overall publication excellence — underscore the versatility of the University Publications team and its many talented collaborators. With this quintet of accolades, University Publications continues a winning streak that has resulted in a total of 11 CASE awards over the past three years.
“We received a record number of entries this year, and your excellent achievement stood out among the best,” wrote the CASE judges. “Your efforts will be recognized as an example for others to emulate.”
University Publications won a silver award for its I Am a Trojan video, which brings to life the five words etched on the pedestal of the Tommy Trojan statue — faithful, skillful, scholarly, courageous and ambitious. Played at USC Orientation sessions, the video officially introduces all new undergraduate and graduate students to these five core values of the USC community.
Produced by the Office of the University Comptroller and published in collaboration with University Relations, the USC Financial Report 2011-12: New Beginnings won three silver awards, recognizing individual photography, design for a multi-page publication, and overall publication excellence in the print president’s reports and annual reports category. The report also earned a bronze for cover design.
The 2011-12 financial report uses a strong, singular concept — Commencement, or New Beginnings — as a metaphor for the university’s transformation under the leadership of a freshly inaugurated USC president. The editorial section, highlighting the year’s achievements, is “wrapped” in a vibrant photo essay from the Commencement ceremony to provide thematic consistency and drama. The publication garnered widespread praise, including congratulations from President C. L. Max Nikias and Provost Elizabeth Garrett.
These awards will be presented at a ceremony at the CASE District VII conference in San Francisco in March. An association for education professionals in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas, CASE includes more than 3,400 schools and nonprofit organizations in 74 countries. USC University Publications competed against the institutions in CASE District VII, which includes Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah, to win these five prestigious awards.
